2026-03-18Jinan University 2026 Admission Guide for Overseas Chinese StudentsAdmission BrochureFounded in 1906, Jinan University, known as the “highest academic institution for overseas Chinese”, is a key university included in China’s Project 211 and the Double First-Class Initiative, as well as a key university supported under the Guangdong High-Level University Development Plan. On October 24, 2018, Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, President of the People’s Republic of China, and Chairman of the Central Military Commission, visited Jinan University and delivered an important speech. He urged the University to uphold the fundamental mission of fostering virtue through education, carry forward the spirit of Jinan University, maintain its distinctive educational traditions, and continue to cultivate outstanding students and strengthen institutional development, while providing better opportunities for overseas Chinese students to study in China and carry forward Chinese culture.Jinan University offers a comprehensive range of academic disciplines, covering 12 major fields of study, including literature, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, science, engineering, medicine, education, arts, and interdisciplinary studies. With balanced strengths across the humanities, sciences, engineering, and medicine, the University demonstrates the distinctive advantages of a comprehensive institution and strong potential for interdisciplinary integration. The University currently consists of 38 schools/colleges, 59 departments, and 18 directly affiliated research institutes. It offers 108 undergraduate programs, 41 Master’s degree programs in first-level disciplines, 28 Doctoral degree programs in first-level disciplines, and 41 categories of professional degree programs. In addition, the University hosts 24 postdoctoral research stations and one postdoctoral research workstation. At present, the University has 52 national-level first-class undergraduate programs and 34 provincial-level first-class undergraduate programs. As of March 2025, 19 disciplines at Jinan University rank within the top 1% globally in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI), placing the University third among universities in Guangdong Province. Among them, 13 disciplines rank within the top 5‰ globally, and Pharmacology and Toxicology ranks within the top 1‰ worldwide. In the fifth round of the Ministry of Education’s national discipline evaluation, 37 first-level disciplines of the University participated, showing significant overall improvement.Deeply rooted in the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, Jinan University operates five campuses located in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai. The University currently enrolls 48,393 full-time students, including 31,851 undergraduate students and 16,542 graduate students. Among them, 16,110 are students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, overseas Chinese communities, and other international students.Jinan University actively promotes its internationalization strategy and has established 148 admission centers in 82 countries and regions worldwide. In 2025, the University hosted 2,012 international students from 97 countries and regions. The University has signed cooperation agreements or memoranda of understanding with 252 universities and institutions in 54 countries and regions across five continents, as well as Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, with substantive collaborative programs underway. The International School, which offers programs taught entirely in English, has been operating for more than 20 years. The Jinan University–University of Birmingham Joint Institute, approved by the Ministry of Education, has demonstrated outstanding educational outcomes. In addition, Jinan University’s College of Japan, an overseas educational institution of the University, has been officially recognized by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology and continues to expand its academic programs.Adhering to its educational principle of “serving overseas Chinese and students from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan”, Jinan University has, since its founding, educated more than 500,000 graduates from over 170 countries and regions across five continents, as well as Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan. As the saying goes, “Wherever there is the sea, there are alumni of Jinan University.” Today, Jinan University has become the preferred destination for students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and overseas Chinese communities pursuing higher education in Chinese mainland.(Data updated as of March 2025)I. Eligibility RequirementsOverseas Chinese students who possess a high school diploma or equivalent educational qualifications, are generally under the age of 25, have good moral character, no criminal record, and are in good physical and mental health are eligible to apply to Jinan University.According to the Notice of the Ministry of Education and Four Other Departments on the Joint Admission of Overseas Chinese, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Students by Regular Institutions of Higher Education (JX [2018] No. 4), the residency duration of overseas Chinese students and one of their parents holding overseas Chinese status must meet the following requirements:(1) Both the student and one of his or her parents must have obtained long-term or permanent residency in the country of residence, and must have resided continuously in that country for two consecutive calendar years (i.e., from January 1 of one year to December 31 of the following year), with a period of residence of no less than 18 months (540 days). In addition, the student must have resided cumulatively for at least 18 months (540 days) in the country of residence within the two years prior to application (from April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2026).(2) If either the student or one of the parents has not obtained long-term or permanent residency, but has obtained legal residence qualification in the country of residence for five consecutive years or more, the following conditions must be met: Within five consecutive calendar years (i.e., from January 1 of the first year to December 31 of the fifth year, for example January 1, 2019 – December 31, 2023), the cumulative stay in the country of residence must be no less than 30 months (900 days).Meanwhile, the student must have resided cumulatively for at least 30 months (900 days) in the country of residence within the five years prior to application (from April 1, 2021 to March 31, 2026).According to relevant national regulations, Chinese citizens studying abroad (whether government-sponsored or self-funded) during their period of study, or those working abroad on official assignments (including dispatched labor personnel), are not regarded as overseas Chinese.Note: If the student and his or her parent have already obtained long-term or permanent residency in the country of residence, the requirement of “the cumulative actual stay of no less than 30 months in the country of residence within the five years prior to application” does not apply.II. Admission Channels1. Admission through Application ReviewOverseas Chinese students who possess a high school diploma or equivalent academic qualifications, have complete academic records for their overseas high school studies, and have achieved Level 5 (180 points or above) in the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) may apply through the admission through application review. They may be recommended by Jinan University overseas application centers, Chinese embassies or consulates abroad, overseas Chinese organizations or schools, or prominent members of overseas Chinese communities. Alternatively, applicants may submit applications independently with two letters of recommendation from teachers. Based on the applicant’s Chinese or English proficiency, academic performance during secondary education, conduct evaluation, and health status, applicants may be exempted from the written examination. Admission will be granted following comprehensive review and merit-based selection.Applicants for programs offered by the International School, whose native language is not English, must demonstrate English proficiency by achieving one of the following: IELTS 5.5 or above (with no band below 5.0), TOEFL (iBT) 80 or above, or an SAT score of 1030 or above.Based on the review results, the University may require some applicants to participate in written examinations when necessary. Admission through Entrance Examinations(1) Participate in the National Joint Entrance Examination for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and Overseas Chinese Students by Institutions of Higher Education of the People’s Republic of China (hereinafter referred to as “National Joint Entrance Examination”).Registration usually takes place in early March, and the examination is normally held in late May each year. For further details, please refer to the official admission brochure released by the National Joint Entrance Examination Office(https://eea.gd.gov.cn/lhzs/):(2) Applicants who participate in the Joint Entrance Examination for Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Overseas Chinese, and Other Foreign Students by Jinan University and Huaqiao University (hereinafter referred to as the “Joint Entrance Examination of the Two Universities”), and list Jinan University as their first-choice institution will be admitted based on their examination results through merit-based selection.The Joint Entrance Examination of the Two Universities adopts a “3+X” examination format. Chinese Language, English, and Mathematics are required subjects, with one additional elective subject (for liberal arts: History or Geography; for science: Physics, Chemistry, or Biology; for medical programs: either Physics or Chemistry plus Biology).Applicants for science, engineering, or medical programs may also apply simultaneously for programs in liberal arts, foreign studies, economics, management, or law.Examination centers are located in Hong Kong, Macao, Guangzhou, and Xiamen. Admission centers are responsible only for on-site confirmation of online applications and the collection of application materials and application fees. They do not accept modifications or late submissions of online application information. Once the online application is successfully submitted, application materials and fees will not be refunded.2. If any false information in the online application or fraudulent application materials are discovered, the applicant’s application and admission eligibility will be canceled.3. For both the Joint Entrance Examination of the Two Universities and the National Joint Entrance Examination, applicants must complete on-site confirmation procedures at the Shipai Campus of Jinan University (see Application Instructions for details). Online pre-registration records will automatically become invalid if applicants fail to complete on-site confirmation within the specified period. Applicants who are unable to attend in person due to special circumstances must submit a written request and authorize a relative to complete the confirmation on their behalf. The authorized representative shall present the applicant’s identification document, the representative’s identification document, an authorization letter signed by the applicant, and other required application materials. Each representative may complete confirmation procedures for only one applicant.4. Applicants applying through Admission through Application Review must submit the required paper application materials after completing the online application, in accordance with the Jinan University 2026 Guide for Admission through Application Review.Online pre-registration records will automatically become invalid if paper materials are not submitted before the deadline as required.V. Application Materials1. [Application Form] The Application Form for Admission of Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, Overseas Chinese, and Other International Students by Jinan University and Huaqiao University, duly signed by the applicant.2. Documents of Overseas Chinese Students and Their Parents:(Note 1)(1) [Passport] The passport of the applicant and one parent holding overseas Chinese status, including the photo page, visa pages, and entry–exit record stamps. Entry–exit stamps must clearly show the travel records. If the relevant stamps appear in an old passport, the old passport must also be provided.(2) [Proof of Parent-Child Relationship] Legal documentation proving the relationship between the applicant and the parent holding overseas Chinese status, such as a birth certificate or household register. If a notarized certificate of parent–child relationship is provided, it must have been issued after April 1, 2025 to be considered valid. (If both parents of the applicant are deceased, relevant legal documents such as proof of the parents’ overseas Chinese status and death certificates must be provided).(3) [Proof of Residency and Duration of Residency] Copies of the foreign long-term or permanent residence permits, or legal residence permits (if applicable, including both front and back sides), of the applicant and one parent holding overseas Chinese status. In addition, applicants must provide a certificate issued by a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad verifying that the applicant and the relevant parent have obtained long-term or permanent residence in the country of residence (The certificate shall be in Chinese, and must specify the continuous period of residence in the country of residence, and the actual cumulative duration of residence within the relevant two-year period). Alternatively, applicants may submit a certificate verifying legal residence qualification in the country of residence (The certificate shall be in Chinese, and must specify the continuous period during which the applicant and the relevant parent holding overseas Chinese status have obtained legal residence in the country of residence, as well as the actual cumulative duration of residence within the past five years).If the applicant resides in a country that has not established diplomatic relations with China, a residence certification issued by the embassy or consulate of a third country that maintains diplomatic relations with both China and the country of residence must be provided, along with a certification issued by the Chinese embassy or consulate in that third country (The certificate shall be in Chinese, and must specify the date on which the residence status was obtained);(4) [Entry and Exit Records] The Entry–Exit Record Inquiry Results issued by the immigration authorities of both the country of residence and China for the applicant and the parent holding overseas Chinese status (including entry and exit dates, places of stay, and duration of stay).3. [Diploma] and [Academic Transcripts] The high school graduation certificate or higher-level academic qualification certificate, and official transcripts for all years of high school study, issued by the graduating high school. All documents must be notarized or authenticated (Note 1).Standardized test score reports (if available; see Note 3) may also be submitted. If the documents are not in Chinese, a Chinese translation must be provided.4. [Language Proficiency Certificate] Score reports for HSK, IELTS, or TOEFL (scores must have been obtained within the past two years; required for applicants applying through Admission through Application Review).5. [Personal Statement] (Self-introduction, previous educational experience, and study plans in China, required for applicants applying through Admission through Application Review).6. [Recommendation Letters] Two letters of recommendation (which may be issued by the Jinan University Overseas Admission Office, local overseas Chinese organizations, prominent members of overseas Chinese communities, or the principal or teachers of the applicant’s graduating high school).7. [Medical Examination Report] Applicants for medical-related programs must provide a medical examination report issued within the past six months. The template for the medical report can be found in the attached Medical Examination Form (required for applicants applying through Admission through Application Review).Notes:(1) According to the Hague Convention Abolishing the Requirement of Legalisation for Foreign Public Documents, documentary materials such as foreign residence certificates and foreign academic credentials obtained by applicants (Items 2 and 3 above) must be accompanied by an Apostille issued by the competent authority of a contracting state to the Hague Convention (except India). If the issuing country is India or a non-contracting state to the Hague Convention, a consular authentication issued by a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad must be provided. If any documents are not in Chinese, they must be translated into Chinese by a qualified translation agency.(2) All certificates and documents submitted by applicants must be valid at the time of application, and their validity period should cover the duration of the intended study period. If any doubt arises regarding the authenticity of application materials, they will be submitted to the public security authorities or relevant issuing authorities for verification. Applicants found to have submitted fraudulent materials will be held legally liable in accordance with relevant laws and regulations, and their admission will be denied. If such cases are discovered after admission, the University reserves the right to revoke the admission qualification.(3) Standardized test score reports refer to national unified high school graduation examination results, university entrance examination results, or internationally recognized standardized examinations taken during high school education, such as UEC, A-Level, AP, IB, SAT, or ACT.(4) For current-year high school graduates admitted through the National Joint Entrance Examination, applicants must upload their high school graduation certificate (or proof of graduation) and the transcript for the second semester of the final year of high school to the Joint Admission Office application website after enrollment. Applicants admitted through the Joint Entrance Examination of the Two Universities must submit their high school graduation certificate (or proof of graduation) and the transcript for the second semester of the final year of high school after enrollment registration. The Admission Office will verify the submitted materials. Failure to submit the required documents on time or failure to pass verification may result in cancellation of admission.(5) Applicants for the Joint Entrance Examination of the Two Universities must submit one copy of the above application materials, printed on A4 paper, arranged in order and vertically bound, and must also bring the original documents for verification when submitting the materials. The application fee must be paid at the same time.(6) Applicants applying through Admission through Application Review should follow the procedures specified in the Jinan University 2026 Guide for Admission through Application Review. For current-year high school graduates who have not yet obtained their graduation certificate, a pre-graduation certificate issued by the current school may be submitted first. The high school graduation certificate must be uploaded to the application system before August 15, 2026. Failure to submit the required document by the deadline may result in cancellation of admission.VI. Fee Standards1. Scholarships1. Ministry of Education Scholarship for Hong Kong, Macao, and Overseas Chinese StudentsTo encourage Hong Kong, Macao, and overseas Chinese students to pursue studies at universities and research institutions in the Chinese mainland, and to strengthen their sense of national identity while motivating them to study diligently and strive for excellence, the “Ministry of Education Scholarship for Hong Kong, Macao, and Overseas Chinese Students” has been established. The scholarship is awarded annually and consists of four levels: for undergraduate students, the Special Prize is RMB 8,000 per student per year; the First Prize is RMB 6,000 per student per year; the Second Prize is RMB 5,000 per student per year; and the Third Prize is RMB 4,000 per student per year.2. Jinan University – FDSTC Scholarship for Freshmen from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and Overseas Chinese CommunitiesTo encourage and support outstanding students from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and overseas Chinese communities to apply to Jinan University, the University and the Foundation for the Development of Science and Technology in China (FDSTC) have jointly established the Jinan University Undergraduate Scholarship for Freshmen from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and Overseas Chinese Communities. This scholarship is awarded to outstanding full-time undergraduate freshmen from Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and overseas Chinese communities admitted to Jinan University. Eligible overseas Chinese students may also participate in the selection for the “Outstanding Students of the Joint Entrance Examination” Scholarship, with awards ranging from RMB 20,000 to RMB 50,000.VIII. Accommodation, Medical Care, and Other Living ServicesJinan University operates five campuses located in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Zhuhai, with the main campus situated in Shipai Subdistrict, Tianhe District, Guangzhou. The University covers a total campus area of 2.2681 million square meters, with 1.8326 million square meters of building space and 491,800 square meters of student dormitories. The University library holds 4.3534 million volumes. Student dormitory rooms are equipped with beds, luggage racks, small wardrobes, desks, chairs, internet access ports, air conditioning, and bathrooms, although single-occupancy rooms are not provided.The University operates a campus medical clinic and ten affiliated hospitals, including four Grade A tertiary hospitals, providing medical services for students and staff at any time. During their study period, students are required to pay the national medical insurance fee and are entitled to basic public medical services in accordance with national regulations.Several student dining halls are available on campus, offering a variety of meal options. Monthly meal expenses generally range from RMB 1,000 to RMB 1,500. In addition, the campus provides various service facilities, including banks, post offices, barbershops, laundry services, repair services, bookstores, supermarkets, restaurants, and photo studios.The University’s Student Activity Center, large gymnasium, and various sports facilities provide venues for academic, recreational, and sports activities. Jinan University fosters a diverse and inclusive campus culture, with vibrant student organizations and a strong atmosphere of innovation and entrepreneurship. Students frequently achieve outstanding results in high-level competitions both domestically and internationally. Notable alumni athletes such as Su Bingtian, Chen Aisen, and Xie Siyi have won honors for China in major international competitions including the Olympic Games. Jinan University has been selected as one of the first national demonstration universities for deepening innovation and entrepreneurship education reform. Applicants for the programs of Physical Education, Broadcasting and Hosting Arts, Calligraphy, Animation, Drama and Film Directing, Drama and Film Literature, and Sound Recording Arts shall, in principle, list these programs as their first-choice program and must also register separately to participate in the professional skills test.4. A physical examination will be conducted after enrollment. Students admitted to medical-related programs (including Clinical Medicine, Preventive Medicine, Stomatology, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Chinese Materia Medica, and Biopharmaceutical Sciences) who are found to have color blindness or color weakness will be transferred to programs other than medical disciplines.5. Applicants for the Chinese Language Education program offered by the College of Chinese Language and Culture must apply through the Special Enrollment Scheme for the Overseas Chinese Language and Culture Education Scholarship Program. Specific requirements shall be subject to the relevant admission brochure issued by the College of Chinese Language and Culture of Jinan University.IX. University Preparatory ProgramApplicants who do not meet the admission requirements for undergraduate programs may apply for the University Preparatory Program (Arts or Science streams).Preparatory Program A (Arts / Science): One-year program. Upon completion of the program and passing the completion examination, students who meet the graduation requirements will be awarded a Preparatory Program Completion Certificate issued by Jinan University. Students who pass all courses and demonstrate good conduct may proceed directly to the corresponding undergraduate programs at Jinan University.Preparatory Program B (Arts / Science): One-year program. After completing the program, students may progress to undergraduate study through one of the following three pathways:1. Based on the overall academic performance and conduct evaluation, approximately 20% of outstanding students may be recommended for direct admission to relevant undergraduate programs at Jinan University without taking an entrance examination.2. Students whose annual academic performance meets the passing requirements, who are not recommended for direct admission and have not received any disciplinary sanctions, may take the direct advancement examination for Preparatory Program A. Those who pass all subjects may be directly admitted to the relevant undergraduate programs of Jinan University.3. Students who are neither recommended nor directly advanced may take the Joint Entrance Examination of the Two Universities or the National Joint Entrance Examination in the same year.Main Courses:Arts Stream: Chinese Language, English, Mathematics, History, and Geography.Science Stream: Chinese Language, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.X.
